I came across this
site which is promoting mountain bike tours to Peru!
I've been interesting in hiking the Inca trail to Machu Picchu but mountain biking & seeing it would be so unique. Ten days of torturous climbs from the sounds of things - got to love it!

It's pretty pathetic that my lungs started to burn just from reading this post. I think you should do it Garth... It's one of those once in a lifetime things.
It'd be cool but for now I'm just trying to stay in shape for mtn biking season this spring - hard to do when skiing season grinds to a halt with frigid temps. I don't think we'll be going anywhere for the next couple years with the new baby on the way in May but hey you never know!
Maaaan...that looks oh-so-epic.
Ten days of 'torturous' climbs? To me, the word 'torturous' does not generally go hand-in-hand with the word 'fun'. You're nuts!
Some pain is good pain - climbing hills does have its rewards - you get to go down them too! Maybe it is a bit sadistic but pain is an incredible motivator - to get to the top of the hill without giving up & experiencing the pain of having to walk your bike up! It is hard to explain to people not into it.
Sore muscles from a good workout tell you that you did a good job in fatiguing your muscles.
Ironically, my last bowflex workout has left me with some pretty tender triceps - in fact to the point where I struggled to raise a cup of water to my lips. I must have looked hilarious to my students trying to get my few sips of H20!
