The Legend Brett Favre

It's tough to see a hero retire but my admiration for Brett Favre continues on. I love football - it is one of toughest sports out there and from my perspective not only the most physical but one that requires the most mental effort. Every player has a role to play and critical for any forward progress to occur. The quarterbacks, receivers & running backs get the majority of the accolades but each player on the team is necessary. I love that. I would encourage y'all to check out his retirement video as it truly reflects this man's love of the game.
Favre completes his 17-year career as the NFL's all-time leader in every significant career passing category - touchdowns (442), completions (5,377), attempts (8,758) and yards (61,555), plus wins (160). His 253 consecutive starts (275 including playoffs) is the NFL record for quarterbacks and the second-longest recorded streak in league history. The league's only three-time MVP, Favre led the Packers to 11 playoff appearances, including seven division crowns, four NFC Championship Games, two Super Bowls and a World Championship with a victory in Super Bowl XXXI.

Clearly, Favre was not only a three time MVP but also an "everyman" - a person that anyone could relate to. He was a legend but so down-to-earth & clearly fallible. He's a hero that I will expose my son to as a man to emulate - someone who although went through struggles, fought & won.
Favre ended his career with class & character. Will I wonder - what if he stuck around another year? You betcha! But I admire him going out on top.

I consider myself blessed to have actually seen Brett Favre & the Packers play on Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Football will not be the same without him and it will be interesting to see where the Pack ends up next season but I've been a fan of the Pack for close to twenty years - 16 of them Favre has been the QB - and I will remain a Pack fan.

Gotta Love My Packers

I personally love this time of year...there is something in the air - that's right crisp cool air & football! My Green Bay Packers are playing unbelievable with a 8-1 record. So here's a pic of me and my boy Zach watching the Packer's blow away the Vikings 34-0! Today was a good day - the Bombers won their playoff game too!

Sunday Football & Cycling

So good to relax on the couch and watch my Packers back in action. Good to get a win out of it too - even if it was a bit of a rough start to the season. Also managed to escape for a nice short but intense road ride for 20kms. I love this time of year with the crisp cool air! Lots of great mountain biking ahead!

Favre is back with the Packers for 2007

Okay... I realize this is not necessarily big news for non-NFL fans but it is huge for me! Let me enjoy this moment as I celebrate the return of my all-time favorite quarterback! Click here for more info!

Wild-Card game definitely wild!

Wow - well I've enjoyed my NFL playoffs today! Amazing to have Seattle pull off that win against Dallas. We'll see what happens tomorrow - I'm kind of rooting for the NY Jets & Philly's Eagles tomorrow but who knows what will happen? As far as my NFL teams that I'll be cheering for - I've always been an NFC guy - Green Bay since the early 90's and this obviously continues but they didn't make the playoffs this year, I got to liking Seattle when Holmgren took the reigns and obviously Hasselbeck & Alexander have been a great pair to have led the team to the Superbowl last year, and finally this season I've really enjoyed Drew Brees & Reggie Bush with the New Orleans Saints - sort of a "rags to riches" story I guess. So yeah - we'll see how Seattle does and if they don't make it past the next match up, we'll root for the Jets or the Saints.

Happy Birthday To Wendy & Happy New Year's Eve!

A shot of the moon & a fireworks burst of light courtesy of my dad's pyrotechnic aptitude.

Last year we spent New Year's in Green Bay but this year we were able to get away to the Star Lake Cottage with my parents, my brother Kyle & his family, and my sister Keira.
This shot was taken via tripod on bulb mode on New Year's Eve.

Our annual tradition of sparklers & fireworks!

I did manage to get a few football games in and saw the Packers clobber the Bears but unfortunately they just missed getting into the playoffs with the Giants having a stronger strength of schedule or something like that. I guess I'll be cheering for the Seahawks instead - my B-team ended up in the Superbowl last year but they definitely aren't the same team. New Orleans would be my next pick - we'll see what unfolds during the wild-card weekend.
A shot of Chelsea & yours truly doing some skiing at sunset on Star Lake.

A shot of us in less of a posed shot.

I got lots of skiing in - I'm guessing about 20kms by the time the weekend was over and Chelsea joined me for a km or two on the lake trails that my father groomed. We also cleared off a huge section of lake for a skating rink which was a workout in itself.
My little sister Kiki skating (hey if you don't want this posted let me know)
I was able to play a bit with my camera during Wen's birthday celebration that coincides nicely with New Year's fireworks!Wen's birthday cake complete with the appropriate number of candles.

The birthday girl Wendy & our daughters (kind of cute how Chelsea is holding Wens' belly where child #3 currently is hiding out!)

Christmas for unfortunately often involves tons of marking exams - I had total of 86 exams to go through and I managed to get all my marking done by Dec. 30th. On top of that I had to create new syllabi for three courses because of our switch from a modular to a semester double block schedule. So yeah - although I got to play with my family and enjoy some of the festivities, I still had lots of work to get done.
Aimee bundled up, if you look closely you can see her dad in her eyes!

A nice shot of Chelsea in winter-mode.

The girls absolutely love the outdoors and highlights for them included playing with their dolls, building forts, Chels' skiing, Aims' snowmobiling with Grandpa, and both loved going for short hikes in the snow!
A couple shots of Aimee & Grandpa on the snowmachine!

Wendy has caught up to me once again age-wise - at least until March! 2006 was a great year for us as a couple and a family. We'll see what 2007 brings? I'm hoping lots of mountain biking, teachable moments in the classroom, fun & learning times with the family, escapes with Wendy, a healthy baby boy in May, the list continues...

Another shot of our annual tradition of sparklers & fireworks!

Friday Night Lights

One of my favorite movies about football is Friday Night Lights. It is a dark movie in someways, even the lighting at times is eerie, and the soundtrack is so emotional, by an amazing instrumental band - Explosions in the Sky. I heard in the fall that a spin-off tv series was going to be made but I never bothered to check it out until now. I watched the first episode and was blown away - it actually had a movie feel to it and the character development for a pilot was pretty amazing. There is a bit of a spiritual resonance to the series without it being preachy - it just sort of captures life in a Texas town that is focused on high school football to the point of fanaticism...it definitely is worth the peek and you might just stay hooked on the show like I seem be becoming!

#4 is Back!

I have to admit some relief in hearing that the Green Bay Packer's QB Brett Favre has decided to continue his contract with them. It would have been cool if I really had been at his last game but my fingers are crossed that this season will bring them back to where they should be - #1 in the NFC North but we'll see!

It's over !

Well - I admit the Steelers in the end outplayed the Seahawks. There were some close moments where Seattle could have pulled ahead but the penalties, ball drops, and a nasty interception buried Seattle by the time the 2 minute mark hit. I'm happy for the Steelers though and Bettis - it was a fascinating roller-coaster ride for sixth seed team to win Lombardi's Trophy. Cool to see Bart Starr bring the trophy out - Green Bay's finest MVP! The Rolling Stones weren't my idea of a good halftime show - kind of scary seeing those English skeletons rocking it out in tight pants. It's obviously a few months before football starts again next September!

AFC & NFC Championships

Well, in true exploreplay fashion - I need to express that my prophecies of who would win today came true! Got to love football! I'm rooting for my b-team Seattle Seahawks to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Superbowl. I always have that bitter-sweet feeling this time of year - I love playoffs but once the Superbowl is over there is this incredible emptiness on Sunday afternoons & Monday nights till the next NFL season begins in fall! Well - here's a cool factiod - I saw a Superbowl contendor in person New Year's Day! Good on ya Hasselbeck & team! I think both teams deserve to be there and I am hoping for a great game! Go Seahawks!

Exploring Green Bay

Well - we're back after our second twelve hour drive in 70 hours! My friend Grant, his girlfriend Nancy, my wife Wendy and yours truly left around 7:30pm on Friday night and headed for our epic trip to Green Bay, Wisconsin. Our little black Ford Escape did well driving through flurries, freezing rain, snow, slush, fog, and a few dry sections making it to our destination Lambeau Field on Lombardi Avenue around 7:30am! Below is my account of our trip and a display of some of my pictures!

We arrived in the mist but found breakfast at Country Kitchen down Lombardi Ave. and then headed back to Lambeau Field for a $10 tour at 9:15am. Below is a shot of the atrium and the statues of the two great coaches: Vince Lombardi and Curly Lambeau.

The picture above is the inside of the atrium - the marble floor has the markings of the field and actually line up with the yard lines. I admit to being somewhat emotional during the tour - I actually there at Green Bay! Lambeau Field was established in 1957 and is the oldest and longest occupied NFL stadium. Only Fenway Park & Wrigley Field have longer active homefield tenures in pro sports.

Private Box Visit

The field
The tour was well worth it as we got to explore the upper levels of the complex, including a private box visit, and a walk through the tunnel on to the field sidelines!

The tunnel!
Just before you exit the tunnel the following words are enscribed on a plaque: "Proud generations of Green Bay Packer players, World Champions a record 12 times, have run over this very concrete to Greatness." Inspiring words and an emotional moment for me to retrace the footsteps of some great football players. It all seemed like a dream to me although perhaps the foggy weather had something to do with that and the fact that I drove the 12 hours previous to actually get there.

Following the tour, we visited the Pro-Shop and layed down some $$ on some Packer wear! On our way out we walked past a number of the Packers driving in their SUVs to a workout or team meeting. A number of the players stopped by their fans to sign autographs. What a day! We decided to get some more food into our system and stopped by a local sports bar/pizza joint on Holmgren Ave for some pizza, drinks and the local culinary specialty: deep-fried cheese curds! We of course were pretty wiped by this point and managed to get some rest in our hotel after sitting in the hot tub and swimming in the pool. I should note that Dec. 31 happens to be Wendy's birthday and so we celebrated that along with New Year's at the hotel restaurant with some appetizers before heading to bed!

The next morning we woke up around 9am and got ready to go to the game. First off, we had to find parking for about $10 and then walked a couple blocks past endgate parties complete with bbq'd meats of all types including ribs, sausage, and even someone with crab legs! The weather was overcast but a balmy + 2 or 3 degrees celcius. We got to our seats early to watch the warm-up and it allowed me to get down to row 1 for some excellent shots of players.

The Game

Wendy & Yours Truly!
I am not going to go into the details of the game as you can read the article link I have above but it was a great game to be a part of as a fan. Some speculate that it could be Favre's final game and I'm not convinced. But if it was - I was there! It also marked Shawn Alexander's breaking of a record for touchdowns in a season but I admit I wasn't there for Seattle even though I will be rooting for them in the play-offs. Potentially I saw a team that could be in the Superbowl. I just love the game - NFL blows away any other sport...even hockey! It is like chess and soccer combined. I should also note that I love outdoor stadiums and even though an indoor stadium may be more comfortable I think it takes away from the game - the weather should be a part of every sport.

The Canadian Packer Fans: Grant, Nancy & Wendy (I'm taking the picture)
We had some phenomenal seats: Row 13 - right on the end zone line. We were in awe at how close we were to the field and were treated with two touchdowns on our end. The fans were amazing and we felt like we were at some bizarre family reunion! When we scored everyone celebrated together, giving high fives and whoops in community. Below are a sampling of some of my shots (I took around 87 pictures with my Pentax Ist-D S and a Pentax 80-320 lens) that if I had more time I'd describe each shot more fully:
